your browser doesn't support javascript or you have disabled javascript. about the bls join the bls what's on next calender of events about llamas llama care/health llama activities fibre about camelids business directory buying llamas/for sale rehoming policy spotlight on members equipment sale / wanted facebook bls clothing gallery newbury show somerset show the forum members' area contact us sitemap btb (2) health and welfare (3) tb (1) rss feed welcome to the website of the british llama society (bls) 01/01/01 12:12 llamas are members of the south american camelid family and are mostly found in the high altiplano regions of the andes in peru, bolivia and chile. they are the domesticated cousin of wild guanacos are used extensively by the andean people and were used in the past by the incas as beasts of burden, for food, for fibre and for leather (from their hides). the british llama society has been set up to promote all aspects of llama and guanaco ownership: good husbandry, breeding, trekking, driving, showing and much more. it publishes a quarterly magazine called "llama llink". the bls operates a registration system for llamas, guanacos, vicunas and camels, which is an important facility in these days of increasing regulation. it is affiliated to british camelids ltd., a charity that promotes the responsible ownership of camelids in the uk. the society brings together a lively community of people who have been captivated by these fascinating animals. we operate a forum for all things llama-related and within the forum is a members-only area for members of the bls. agm 01/05/17 14:37 a very successful agm was held on the 22 april at the home of member tina gambell at wisbech. around 15 members were present together with vet. claire lomas. the day started with the usual llama chat over tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes and moved onto four of tina's llamas being sheared. victoria barratt then gave a handling display using camylid dynamics. we then moved onto the local village hall for lunch followed by the formal part of the meeting at which the chairman tim crowfoot, gave a report of the year's activities and presented the audited accounts for approval. the full minutes of the agm will be produced in the members area shortly. north somerset show 01/05/17 14:37 the north somerset show provided perfect weather for showing llamas on the may day bank holiday. the show is well organised and access is easy. llamas from four farms attended this year's event with phil and fiona's davis' biggles winning the older male class. loupin stanes was awarded first place in the intermediate female class with her older sister tintagel winning the older female class with david and fanny james' belas knap taking second place in the same class. the championship was a close run thing but golden valley tintagel just edged it over previous supreme champion, the davis' biggles. the dodd's took first and second place in the gelding competition, and the largest class of the day, the fleece on the hoof class was awarded to loupin stanes. crowds were bigger at the show than for many years and there was a lot of interest in the llamas. owners chatted to visitors during the rest of the day and explained the reasons we own them. llama owners are pet owners and the limited commercial activity in relation to llamas consists of some breeding and sales to new pet owners, a little llama trekking, and cottage industry fleece and fibre production and processing. the north somerset show remains just one of two county shows with show classes for llamas. british llama society members will be in attendance with their llamas at the berkshire show over the weekend of 16th and 17th september 2017 for the national show.
